What to do in Málaga in August 2026

What to do in Málaga in August 2026: the Fair, beaches and espetos, Málaga CF in the top flight, plans for the heat and tips from local hosts.

August is the liveliest month of the year in Málaga: the city smells of sea and grilled sardines, the nights stretch out and, mid-month, everything explodes with the Feria. It is hot —we won't pretend otherwise—, but with a little local strategy you can enjoy it to the full. Here is our guide to what to do in Málaga in August, with the big plans and the tricks to do them right.

The Málaga Fair (15–22 August)

The event of the month. From 15 to 22 August, Málaga celebrates its Feria across two settings: the day fair in the centre (Calle Larios, Plaza de la Constitución) —flamenco, horses and sweet wine in broad daylight— and the night fair at the Real del Cortijo de Torres, with casetas, funfair rides and concerts until dawn. Nine days of celebration that begin with the fireworks on the night of the 14th.

Beach, chiringuitos and espetos

In August, the beach is half a plan and half a refuge. La Malagueta is the most central; to the west, Huelin and La Misericordia are calmer and more family-friendly; to the east, Pedregalejo and El Palo keep their fishing-village soul and serve the best sardine espetos grilled over open fire. The perfect August plan: a swim, an espeto and a siesta in the shade.

Málaga CF, back in the top flight

New this summer: Málaga CF are back in the top flight and LaLiga kicks off in mid-August, right in the middle of the Feria. If your trip coincides, a football night at La Rosaleda —with the roar of the Frente Bokerón— is a great alternative plan to round off the month.

Escaping the heat: museums and day trips

When the sun is fierce, Málaga has first-class refuges. Its museums (Picasso, Thyssen, Pompidou, the Museum of Málaga) are equal parts air conditioning and culture, and several are free on Sunday afternoons. And if you fancy a change of scene, the inland day trips are best done early: the Caminito del Rey, Ronda or the white village of Frigiliana make perfect August-morning plans.

Sunsets and summer nights

The Málaga summer is best enjoyed after dark. Climb up to Gibralfaro Castle at sunset to watch the city light up, stroll along Muelle Uno with the sea beside you or have a drink on a rooftop with views of the Cathedral. And in August, once the sun goes down, there is always the day fair stretching into the night.

Tips for August (heat and crowds)

  • Split the day in two: beach or sightseeing in the morning, a siesta during the hottest hours and out and about from 7pm.
  • Hydrate and protect yourself from the sun: water, a hat and shade are your allies.
  • Book ahead: accommodation, tables and tickets fly in August, and even more during the Feria.
  • Get around on foot or by public transport: parking in the centre in August is mission impossible.

Where to stay in August

Two winning plays: the centre, to enjoy the day fair on foot and have museums and tapas within reach; or by the sea, in Huelin, to drop onto the beach the moment you wake up. Whatever your plan, book early: August is the month that fills up first.
