The best beaches near Málaga city centre

One of the great things about Málaga is that you can do city sightseeing and hit the beach the same day without a car. The urban coastline strings together several beaches, each with its own character, all linked by a seafront promenade that runs for miles. These are our favourites, from the most central to the tastiest.

La Malagueta, the most central

A ten-minute walk from the old town, La Malagueta is the postcard beach: wide, lively and with every amenity. Perfect for a quick dip between sights, though it fills up in summer. Right beside it you have the port and Muelle Uno to round things off with a stroll.

Huelin and the Antonio Banderas promenade

To the west, the Huelin beaches are calmer and more family-friendly, with a promenade —the Antonio Banderas— full of beach bars, play areas and a cycle lane. It’s the area we recommend staying in if you want the sea at the end of the street without giving up a quick trip to the centre.

Pedregalejo and El Palo, espetos and fishing-village charm

To the east, Pedregalejo and El Palo keep the soul of the old fishing quarters: small coves, low houses and the best sardine espetos grilled over open fires in the boats. It’s the perfect plan for lunch with your feet almost in the sand and an unhurried sunset.

Baños del Carmen, for the sunset

Between the city and Pedregalejo, Baños del Carmen is a former bathing resort with a beach bar in the shade of eucalyptus trees. It’s not the best beach for swimming, but it is one of the best spots in Málaga for a sunset beer with the sea behind you.
