Nerja & Frigiliana from Málaga: a guide
Nerja and Frigiliana in a day from Málaga: the Balcón de Europa, the Caves of Nerja and the prettiest white village. How to get there and what to see.
East of Málaga, in the Axarquía, two gems can be seen on the same day: Nerja, with its famous Balcón de Europa overlooking the sea, and Frigiliana, one of the prettiest white villages in Spain. They're barely an hour from the city and together make a perfect sea-and-mountain day out.
Nerja: the Balcón de Europa and the caves
The Balcón de Europa is a viewpoint on a former castle, with the Mediterranean at your feet and lovely coves on either side (Calahonda and Burriana, perfect for a swim). On the edge of town are the Caves of Nerja, an underground cathedral of stalactites with prehistoric paintings; it's worth buying tickets in advance, especially in summer.
Frigiliana: the white village
Just six kilometres uphill, Frigiliana feels like another era: cobbled lanes, whitewashed houses dressed with flowers, its Moorish quarter and views of sea and mountain. It's one of those places to get lost without a map, have a drink on a terrace with a view and buy cane honey or sweet wine. It tops the lists of Spain's prettiest villages year after year.
How to get there from Málaga
- By car (≈1 h): about 55 km on the A-7 motorway. The easiest way to link Nerja and Frigiliana in one day.
- By bus: there are frequent services from Málaga to Nerja (around an hour) and, from Nerja, a local bus goes up to Frigiliana.
Tips and where to stay
Start with the caves or the Balcón first thing, have lunch in Nerja by the sea and head up to Frigiliana in the late afternoon, when the heat drops and the light is best for its white streets. If the sea calls you, our Huelin apartment puts the Málaga beach on your doorstep; if you prefer the centre, any of our homes makes a perfect base.
