Where to stay in Málaga: a neighbourhood guide
Old town, El Molinillo, La Trinidad or by the beach: which Málaga neighbourhood suits your trip, explained by local hosts.

Málaga is a city for walking. The old town, the port and the first beaches all fit within a stroll, so choosing a neighbourhood isn’t about “how close to everything” you are —almost everything is close— but about the rhythm you want for your days: the buzz of the pedestrian streets, the calm of a lived-in quarter, or the sound of the sea at the end of the street.
The old town, to be in the thick of it
If it’s your first time in Málaga, you’ll want to wake up near Calle Larios, the Cathedral and the Alcazaba. It’s the liveliest area —terraces, museums, tapas— and the easiest for getting around without thinking about transport. The trade-off is weekend-night noise, so a well-insulated home or one set slightly back from the busiest streets pays off.

El Molinillo: properly central, without the racket
Seven minutes on foot from Larios but a world away: El Molinillo is a quiet, lived-in quarter with the Salamanca market —a little neo-Mudéjar gem— around the corner. Here you buy fruit among neighbours and sleep in silence, yet you’re still right in the centre. It’s our favourite area for anyone who wants the best of both worlds.

La Trinidad and the local side of town
Across the river, La Trinidad is one of Málaga’s most characterful quarters: traditional, neighbourly and a five-minute walk from the centre. It’s perfect if you want value and authenticity without giving up walking everywhere — with the bonus of some of the best views of the Cathedral and the Gibralfaro.

Huelin and the sea at the end of the street
If you’re here to switch off, Huelin is the neighbourhood: steps from the beach and the lively Antonio Banderas promenade, full of beach bars, a cycle lane and play areas. The centre is minutes away by public transport, but at night you’ll happily stay for dinner by the sea. Ideal for families and groups who want a terrace and a barbecue.
