On the morning of 2 August 2027, the sun is going to vanish from the Málaga sky for almost two minutes. That's not a figure of speech: Spain will be the only country in Europe from which a total solar eclipse can be seen, and Málaga city — together with Cádiz and the Strait of Gibraltar — has one of the best front-row seats of any large city on the path. It's the kind of event that, in the same place, only repeats itself once every several decades.

What will actually happen in Málaga

According to Spain's National Geographic Institute (IGN), totality in Málaga city will begin at 10:48am and last between 1 minute 48 seconds and 1 minute 53 seconds, with maximum eclipse around 10:49am. The sun will already be high in the sky — unlike the 2026 partial eclipse, which happened near sunset — making it far easier to watch from a terrace, a rooftop, or any street with a clear view.

One important nuance: Málaga city sits right at the edge of the totality band. The urban centre and the beach areas fall inside the band where the sun is fully covered; the far north of the municipality, toward the hills, only gets a very high partial eclipse (over 99%, but without full darkness). Bookings are already climbing fast

A year out, the market has already started moving: apartments booked in Málaga province for 2 August 2027 currently sit at 3.2%, four times the 0.8% recorded at the same distance out for this year's eclipse. In Cádiz province, within the longest-duration band, several hotels have had bookings for three months already, and British (27%), German (18%) and Spanish (13%) travellers are leading the early bookings. Local hoteliers say there will be accommodation "for every budget", but they also admit some smaller places are already blocking off dates to make sure locals aren't shut out of their own city.

In plain terms: there's still room to move, but every month that passes leaves fewer good options, and last-minute prices around eclipse dates tend to spike everywhere in the world. If you already know you want to be in Málaga that morning, booking a year ahead isn't overkill — it's just staying a step ahead of demand that's already visible in the numbers.
